It is superstition that great meritorious men die on the day of Ekadashi, eleventh day of a fortnight according to lunar calendar. Kakasaheb Dixit also had the same belief. Two old devotees of Sai Baba had died on Ekadashi. He considered them to be meritorious & fortunate. Kakasaheb also died on Ekadashi.
Sai Baba left His mortal coil on the day of VIJAYA DASHAMI (Dashahara or Dassera). But according to almanac dashami the tenth day of lunar calendar had ended & Ekadashi had already started. Only for practical purpose it was counted as Vijaya Dashami day. But Kakasaheb Dixit insisted that the day was Ekadashi. Madhavrao Deshpande supported him.
The question was raised at the time of first death anniversary of Baba. First ranking devotees like Nanasaheb Chandorker, Bapu Saheb Buti decided to celebrate the 1st Anniversary on Dassera. Many devotees participated in the event which was celebrated in Shirdi.
Baba’s devotees spread all over. To inform them about the celebrations, an advertisement was published in prominent news papers. Kakasaheb honestly sticking to his opinion, celebrated the first anniversary on Ekadashi in his bungalow at Parle, Mumbai. Moreswar Pradhan of Santacruz also arranged the event on Ekadashi, in Sai Pradhan Baug. In the same news paper, “Induprakash”, there were three advertisements of Baba’s Death Anniversary from Shirdi, Villi Parle & Santacruz. In the first one, the day mentioned was Dassera & in the other two, it was Ekadashi. All were confused. Nanasaheb Chandorker & Bapu Saheb Buti felt sorry as that was creating misunderstanding amongst devotees. To avoid such unpleasant situation, both of them came to Parle, to convince Kakasaheb. When he stood firm on his opinion, they decided to check Baba’s omen. Kakasaheb agreed on it. Folded papers were kept before Baba’s photo & the answer was sought. According to Baba’s omen, Dassera day was confirmed as Death Anniversary. Till today it is celebrated on Dassera Day.

సాయిబాబా పుణ్యతిధి గురించి..........................
గొప్ప యోగ్యులందరూ చాంద్రమానాన్ని అనుసరించి పదకొండవ రోజయిన ఏకాదశి నాడు స్వర్గస్తులవుతారనుకోవడం ఒక అంచనా మరియూ నమ్మకమూ. కాకాసాహెబ్ దీక్షిత్ కూడా అదే నమ్మకంతో వుండేవారు. సాయిబాబా యొక్క ఇద్దరు పురాతన భక్తులు ఏకాదశినాడే దేహాన్ని విడిచారు. వారు యోగ్యులనీ, భాగ్యవంతులనీ ఆయన భావించేవారు. కాకాసాహెబ్ దీక్షిత్ కూడా కాకతాళీయంగా ఏకాదశి నాడే దేహాన్ని విడిచారు.
సాయిబాబా విజయదశమి (దసరా) రోజున తన భౌతిక శరీరాన్ని విడిచి పెట్టారు. కానీ సాయిబాబా దేహాన్ని విడిచే సమయానికి పంచాంగాన్ని అనుసరించి దశమి ముగిసి ఏకాదశి ఘడియలు ప్రవేశించాయి. ఆచరణాత్మకంగా ఆరోజును విజయదశమి గా పేర్కొనడం జరిగింది. కానీ కాకాసాహెబ్ దీక్షిత్ ఆరోజు ఏకాదశి అని పట్టుపట్టారు, మాధవ్ రావు దేశ్ పాండే ఆయనను సమర్దించారు.
బాబా తొలి పుణ్యతిధి జరుపుకునేటప్పుడు ఈ ప్రశ్న ఉత్పన్నమైంది. నానా సాహెబ్ చందోర్కర్, బాపు సాహెబ్ బూటీ వంటి ప్రధమ శ్రేణి బాబా భక్తులందరూ దసరా రోజున పుణ్యతిధి జరుపాలని నిర్ణయించారు. షిరిడిలో జరిగిన ఆ పుణ్యతిధి కార్యక్రమంలో చాలామంది బాబా భక్తులు పాల్గొన్నారు.
బాబా భక్తులు అంతటా వ్యాపించివున్నారు. వారికి బాబా పుణ్యతిధి గురించి తెలియపరిచేందుకు ప్రముఖ వార్తా పత్రికలలో ప్రకటనలు వెలువరించబడ్డాయి. తన పట్టుదలకి సంపూర్ణంగా కట్టుబడిన కాకా సాహెబ్ దీక్షిత్ బొంబాయి లోని తన విలి పార్లే గృహంలో బాబా తొలి పుణ్యతిధి ఉత్సవాన్ని ఏకాదశి నాడు జరుపుకున్నాడు. మోరేశ్వర్ ప్రధాన్ శాంతాక్ర్ఝ్జజ్ లో వున్న తన సాయిప్రధాన్ బాగ్ గృహంలో కూడా ఏకాదశి నాడే పుణ్యతిధి ఉత్సవం జరుపుకున్నాడు. ’ఇందుప్రకాష్’ అన్న వార్తాపత్రికలో బాబా పుణ్యతిధికి సంబంధించి మూడు ప్రకటనలు ఒకటి షిరిడీ నుండి, మరొకటి విలి పార్లే నుండీ, ఇంకొకటి శాంతాక్రజ్ నుండీ ఒకేరోజున వెలువడ్డాయి. షిరిడీ నుండి వెలువడిన ప్రకటనలో పుణ్యతిధి దసరా నాడు అని ప్రకటిస్తే, విలిపార్లే, శాంతాక్రజ్ లనుండి వెలువడిన ప్రకటనలలో పుణ్యతిధి ఏకాదశి నాడు అని ప్రకటించబడింది. అందరూ అయోమయంలో పడ్డారు. నానా సాహెబ్ చంద్రోర్కర్ మరియు బాపు సాహెబ్ బూటీలు భక్తులలో అపార్దాలకు దారితీసేలా జరిగినదానికి విచారించి, అప్రియమైన పరిస్తితిని తప్పించేందుకు కాకా సాహెబ్ దీక్షిత్ కు నచ్చచెప్పలని విల్లి పార్లేకి వచ్చారు. అయితే కాకా సాహెబ్ దీక్షిత్ తన అభిప్రాయమే సరైనదని పట్టు పట్టడంతో బాబా నే శకునం అడగాలని నిర్ణయించుకున్నారు. కాకా సాహెబ్ దీక్షిత్ కూడా అందుకు అంగీకరించారు. బాబా ఫోటో ముందు మడతపెట్టిన రెండు కాగితాలు పెట్టి సమాధానాన్ని కోరారు. బాబా శకునం ప్రకారం దసరా (విజయ దశమి) యే బాబా పుణ్యతిధిగా రూఢీ అయింది. అప్పటినుండీ ఇప్పటివరకూ కూడా బాబా పుణ్యతిధి దసరా (విజయ దశమి) రోజునే జరుపుకుంటున్నారు.
